Welcome to the Sleep Coach. I'm your host, Shelly Simpson. If you're exhausted, but your mind won't shut off at night, you're in the right place. Each week, we'll unpack the science of sleep, hormones, and the nervous system so you can understand what's happening in your body and finally get the rest you deserve. Here we quiet the 3 a.m. mind, calm the body, and help you finally get the sleep you've been missing. Have you ever looked at your life and thought, I shouldn't be this tired? Maybe you're sleeping more than you used to. Maybe you're taking your supplements and maybe your labs came back normal again. Maybe you're trying to eat healthier and manage stress, and yet your body still feels completely depleted, not lazy, not unmotivated, just depleted. And I think one of the hardest parts for women in midlife is that this exhaustion is often misunderstood. People assume you're just stressed, or oh my gosh, she's being emotional again, or you're being judged because you're not taking care of yourself. Many women are carrying layers of exhaustion that go far beyond simply needing more sleep because midlife exhaustion is often physical, hormonal, neurological, emotional, and physiological all at the same time. And after last week's episode talking about gut health and sleep, I wanted to continue this conversation because so many women are quietly walking around feeling exhausted all the time and wondering what is happening to me. So today we're talking about why midlife exhaustion runs deeper than just being busy. What's happening inside the body? Why so many women feel tired but wired, and why pushing harder is often the exact opposite of what the body actually needs. And honestly, if one more woman tells me she survived entirely on caffeine, cortisol, and pretending she's fine, we may need to start a support group. I think many women have spent decades operating in survival mode without even realizing it. Because they're managing careers, families, aging parents. I mean, my goodness, we are called the sandwich generation. This is the sandwich generation, ladies. We're taking care of kids maybe still in school or adult kids, which I personally think is even harder than taking care of or being a parent to a kid in school still. So yeah, that's another conversation. Um, you have aging parents, uh, relationships, schedules, finances, your mental load, your emotional labor. And somewhere along the way, the body starts keeping score. One thing I think happens to so many women in men's life is that they've become incredibly skilled at functioning while exhausted. And honestly, society rewards women for this. Women get praised for pushing through, multitasking, sacrificing themselves, taking care of everyone else, staying productive no matter how depleted they feel. So a lot of women don't even recognize how disconnected they become from their bodies until symptoms start screaming for attention. And usually the body whispers before it screams. First, it may look like needing more caffeine, waking up tired, more irritability, brain fog, sugar cravings, feeling overwhelmed more easily, trouble recovering from stress. But because women are so used to overriding their needs, they keep pushing. And eventually the body says, Okay, if you won't slow down voluntarily, I'm going to force this conversation. And that's when women often start experiencing insomnia, anxiety, digestive issues, burnout, chronic fatigue, hormone symptoms, emotional overwhelm, or feeling like they suddenly became a different person. And honestly, many women tell me, and I've even heard myself tell myself this, I don't even recognize myself anymore. And that can feel scary, especially for women who spent decades being the reliable one, the productive one, the strong one, the caretaker, the one who held everything together. But the truth is the body was never designed to operate under chronic stress indefinitely. At some point, the nervous system begins shifting from resilience into protection mode. And here's the tricky part. For many women, exhaustion doesn't always look like collapsing on the couch. Sometimes exhaustion can look like irritability, anxiety, brain fog, overstimulation, waking up tired, craving sugar and caffeine, feeling emotionally flat, difficulty concentrating, or that again, that feeling of wired but tired. When cortisol and stress hormones stay elevated for long periods of time, the body starts prioritizing survival over restoration. And eventually the nervous system loses flexibility. So, meaning that your body has trouble fully relaxing and it struggles to produce steady energy. So many women think if I could just get one good night of sleep, I'll feel normal again. But often the nervous system has been running on stress chemistry for so long that the body no longer knows how to shift easily into deep restoration. And here's something else I think confuses a lot of women. Even when they finally sit down to rest, they still don't feel rested. Have you ever experienced that? You finally get a quiet moment, you finally stop moving, and instead of feeling calm, your brain almost becomes louder. Suddenly, you start to remember those emails or appointments or things you forgot to do, random worries, conversations you replay for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Oh my gosh, yes, that's totally me. Your body is still sitting still. But internally, your nervous system is running a marathon. And this is incredibly common in women who've lived in chronic stress for years because the nervous system can become conditioned to constant stimulation. So slowing down actually starts to feel uncomfortable. Silence feels unfamiliar, stillness feels unfamiliar, uh, rest feels unfamiliar. And many women assume I must be bad at relaxing. No. Your nervous system just simply has forgotten what safety feels like. And healing often involves teaching the body that it no longer has to stay on a high alert all the time. I think also there's a type of exhaustion that women carry that doesn't get acknowledged enough. And that is mental load, not just physical tasks, mental tasks, remembering everything, planning everything. I mean, because think about it, we are the planners. Normally, we are mostly we are the planners. We plan everything for everybody, anticipating everything. Women are often managing invisible responsibilities all day long. And even when they're resting, their brains are still tracking schedules, uh, groceries, family needs, work stress, finances, uh, future problems, just all these emotional dynamics. And over time, the brain rarely gets a tune-off switch. It rarely gets to truly turn off. And honestly, this is why some women feel exhausted even after a vacation, because the nervous system doesn't, it just didn't actually disengage. The body went to the beach, but the brain still brought the spreadsheet. And I think many women don't realize how much energy chronic hypervigilance consumes. You're always thinking ahead, you're always preparing, always trying to prevent problems before they even happen. That level of mental and emotional output is exhausting. Then enters midlife hormones into the chat. Because declining estrogen and progesterone can affect your sleep, your mood, your energy, your stress resilience, your metabolism, and nervous system regulation. And many women suddenly notice I just don't recover the way I used to. But because physiologically, the body's changing. What worked in your 20s and 30s often stops working in your 40s and 50s. You can't run on stress the same way. You can't ignore sleep the same way. You can't skip meals or overload on caffeine or energy drinks, and then expect the body to just bounce back the same way. That can feel frustrating. But honestly, I think the body is incredibly intelligent. Sometimes symptoms are not punishment, they're just communication. The body is saying we cannot continue operating this way anymore. But I also think there's a form of exhaustion we don't talk about enough, and that is emotional exhaustion. The exhaustion of constantly being needed, constantly being responsible, constantly carrying emotional weight for everyone else. Many women are mentally and emotionally on all day. And even at night, the brain doesn't fully power down because the nervous system has been conditioned to stay on alert. Your body cannot heal in constant hypervigilance. And I think for many women, midlife becomes a turning point. But because eventually the body refuses to be ignored, many women finally start asking, What do I actually need? What pace feels healthy? What boundaries do I need? What kind of life supports my nervous system instead of constantly draining it? Sometimes exhaustion becomes the thing that finally forces women to reconnect to themselves. So, what actually helps? Not perfection, not doing more, not becoming the world's most stressed out wellness influencer. Sometimes supporting energy in midlife starts with stabilizing your blood sugar, improving sleep quality, your nervous system regulation, eating enough protein, reducing all that overstimulation just day in and day out, all day long, getting some morning sunlight, strength training. I repeat, strength training, very important in midlife for so many reasons. Supporting your gut health, saying no more often, setting those boundaries, ladies, resting before burnout, and then finally acknowledging that you are not a machine. And honestly, half of healing in midlife is realizing burnout should not be your personality. So if you've been feeling exhausted lately, physically, emotionally, mentally, I hope this episode helps you understand that your body's not betraying you. Your symptoms are not random. Your exhaustion is not weakness. And your body is not asking you to become a superhuman. It may actually be asking the opposite to slow down, to nourish yourself, to stop living in constant survival mode, to stop abandoning your own needs to finally create a life your nervous system can feel safe inside of. And maybe healing in midlife isn't becoming who you used to be. Maybe it's becoming someone who no longer has to live in constant depletion just to feel worthy. And if this episode resonated with you, share it with another woman who keeps saying, I'm just tired all the time. Because chances are she's caring far more than anyone realizes.
